ABOUT SVS
The South Valley Symphony is a community orchestra that has been delighting audiences in the South Bay for 35 years. Sixty orchestra members volunteer their time and talent at five concert performances during the concert season under the direction of music director Anthony Quartuccio. As part of the Gavilan College Arts Alliance, we invite students as well as musicians from the community to audition, rehearse, and perform with us. Please see our 2009-1010 Concert Calendar for the schedule of concerts this season.
The Symphony's mission is to make live music available for all ages, and in particular to introduce major modern and classical works to the younger generation. To this end, the Symphony includes music from many genres and styles, including classical symphonic works, opera, jazz, Broadway, and pop. Many performances feature well-known soloists, chorales, and musical groups. You can find samples of our broad range of musical performances on the Past Performances page
Each year the Symphony hosts the Al Navaroli Young Musicians Competition, originally sponsored by, and now held in honor of, Al Navaroli a long-time staunch supporter and former Board Member of the Symphony. The purpose of the competition is to encourage young musicians to develop their talent and skill, and to motivate them with the chance to perform before a live audience. The winners of the Competition are rewarded for their dedication and hard work with a cash prize and the opportunity to perform with the Symphony at our early spring concert.
Ticket sales alone never meet the financial costs of preparing and staging five performances a year. Therefore, the Symphony depends on the financial support of individuals, families, and businesses in the South Santa Clara County and San Benito County communities, especially from Gilroy, Hollister, and Morgan Hill. We ask you to visit the Support SVS pages and learn how you can help the SVS continue to grow and to perform the music you love to hear.
